DMC Ottawa helped conceptualize, planned and delivered a four-afternoon tour program for 150 canals experts from around the world, that highlighted key features of the 202 km Rideau Canal, a newly-proclaimed UNESCO World Heritage Site. Working in partnership with Parks Canada, we developed customized tours of Ottawa and Kingston at either end, including a tour, Fall Harvest Supper and fireworks finalé at Fort Henry.
In between, delegates were fascinated to see: the Stone Arch Dam at Jones Falls, hand-built in 1832 and at the time the highest dam in North America; shop for antiques in Merrickville; and visit the Gate Shop in Smiths Falls where the massive wooden lock gates are still hewn from old-growth lumber and hand-laid by carpenters and blacksmiths using early 19th Century tools. In most other canals, the lock gates are "push-button" steel. Ours still work well.
